SCDs are often used after surgery until you can get up and walk. What are the main evidence-based symptoms reported by patients with superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) before surgery and without concomitant pathology? Bottom line This systematic review identified a 22-item common symptom set that can be used to create an evidence-based patient-reported outcome measure to evaluate health-related quality of life in SCDS. In patients with bilateral SCDS, sound- and pressure-induced vertigo most commonly prompted second-side surgery. Despite some degree of oscillopsia after bilateral SCDS surgery, patients were very satisfied with second-side surgery, given their relief from other SCDS symptoms.

This study investigates a possible fibrinolytic effect of sequential compression devices (SCDs). These devices have been used for decades to reduce risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). However, a randomized study in plastic surgery outpatients has not been done. This study is undertaken to remedy that deficiency in our knowledge base. When compression stockings are recommended after surgery, they should usually be worn as much as possible, day and night, until you're able to move around freely. Compression stockings are used after surgery to prevent blood clots developing in the leg, which is known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (SCDS) is a newly described syndrome with symptoms including sound- and pressure induced vertigo, conductive hyperacusis and autophony. SCDS is caused by absence of bone overlying the superior semicircular canal and can be surgically treated.
The degree of audiometric air-bone gap normalized 6 weeks after surgery. Conclusions: All patients undergoing SCDS repair should undergo a postoperative fall risk assessment. Nystagmus direction (spontaneous and post-head-shaking) seems to be a good indicator of the degree of peripheral vestibular system involvement and central compensation. Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs) must be placed during surgery and immediately after surgery unless a contraindication is documented by the MD, NP or PA within 24 hours of surgery end time. Ted hose alone do NOT satisfy the requirement!

SCDS has been described as a great otologic mimicker because of the wide range of other diagnoses with which it can be confused, so a high degree of suspicion is advisable.

A number of patients have reported that their neck feels better after they recover from their SCDS surgery. Do you find any connection with SCDS and osteoporosis and osteopenia? We have not seen a connection, but this has been suggested by other researchers. Conclusion: Surgical plugging of SCD is an effective management option to provide long-term improvement of the chief complaint in SCDS patients. Patients with bilateral SCD, a history of migraines, and larger defects may be at risk of prolonged recovery and should be appropriately counseled.
